Nolan Arenado and the Colorado Rockies have come to terms on a 8yr/$260 million extension. This will make Arenado the highest average annual value position player in the majors. Only Zach Greinke (a pitcher) will make more annually.
As an avid Rockies fan I’m thrilled the Rockies pulled this off. It says a lot about the franchise being willing to lock up the best 3rd basemen in the league. They aren’t usually known for these type of mega deals. It shows that ownership believes in this team for the next few years. They have a window with Nolan, Blackmon and all the young pitchers on this roster to really make a run the next few seasons. They should be in the playoff hunt for years to come. Fans will love seeing a team going for it instead of all the teams punting right now.
For Nolan he gets to stay in a place he is comfortable. He knows Colorado and loves this team. Fans love him. There’s really no downside for him. A lot of experts thought the Yankees may be in on him next season but with how free agency is going these days I think Nolan wanted no part of that. When the likes of Machado and Harper are still free agents in February that’s not an encouraging environment to go out to. Nolan will be happy where he is and continue his hall of fame path. By the end of this deal he could be at 500 career homers and double digit gold gloves. That would easily make him a lock for the hall even with the Rockies bias in the media. All in all it’s a great deal for Nolan, the Rockies, MLB, and fans.
