With Sev getting injured in spring training the Yankees started to look to add a pitcher. I know the majority of people were thinking Dallas Keuchel, but he was way too expensive for what the Yankees needed and deserves more years. The Yankees were smart and added Gio Gonzalez.
Gio pitched for the A’s, Nationals (where most people know him from), and the Brew Crew to end last season. This was a good get for the Yanks. they can slide him in for spot starts or use him as the long man in the bullpen. From all accounts he isn’t a cancer in the clubhouse and someone that has some postseason experience that the Bombers are used to.
The contract is friendly to both sides. It is a minor league deal, and if he makes the majors he earns 3 mil. If by 4/20 he hasn’t made the pro team he can be released. No harm no foul.
I think he will make the bigs about the 2nd or 3rd week in to be our 5th starter or get the long bullpen job. He once finished 3rd in Cy-Young voting and I draft him most years in fantasy hoping he will regain that again even though those days are behind him.
Great get for the Yankees and good for Gio being on a team that could get passed the first round of the playoffs (yes that is a shot at the Nationals).
